WRAP-UP
I really got a kick out of this class. Learned a whole lot of things about the use of the computer. 3d Gamelab was really easy to use , once i got the hang of what i was doing. It would probably have been better to try and do it in a whole semester, not just a quick summer class. 3d Gamelab, a new experience for me. So, i really don't have much input on how it could be better or what you could do different. First time i have ever done a class that used something like this. I would definitely like to have more classes do it this way. If i could use a blog to turn in papers or compose drafts of different things using hyper-links and glogster, it would eliminate a lot of things. 3d Gamelab, the ease of communication between teacher and student was helpful, as well. If i did something wrong on an assignment i knew right away on what i needed to work on and what to fix in order to get it right. I've also never done an online course, but it seems like it might work out the same way. That seems to work for a lot of people, so 3d GAMELAB gets an A+ from me
CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
In This assignment Is one of the more trickier ones I’ve found, the difficulty was in finding a topic. Eric O. is in my same age group, there isn’t too much we disagree on. After hearing about a person in Singapore getting caned, I thought why not discuss Corporal Punishment in Schools.
No I’m not for principals abusing kids in any way
shape
or form, obviously the cartoon to the left is way out on left base
somewhere. I
believe if paddling was done at an early age, in the principal’s office,
always
under constant supervision. I would have to agree that kids would be
less
likely to act up in class. Think about it people, we have metal
detectors in
high schools these days.
I can say for the most part the
people I associate with, are in my age group and have years sober. Many
of them
dislike the fact that they can’t punish
their children in any way shape or form.
I can actually see that the kids know that they have the power,
and act
buck wild at times.
I grew up in a very strict
household, where parents could instill the fear of god in you with just
one
look. My father had been in the army, and was very stern and quiet. A
couple
years ago I remember talking with my older brothers about out of control
children these days. We unanimously came to the conclusion, that back in
our
day children just didn’t act up. My parent’s put the fear of god in ya!
Three
sources
that I used to learn more about this topic was, first an article in the
New York Times; Entitled “In
many public schools, The Paddle is no
Relic”.
This article I found to be very
interesting being that Mr. Prices punishment systems easily compares to
the
rungs of a ladder. The bottom being a
stiff warning , the next is detention followed by isolation from other
students. To me it reads that the next step is your parents getting to
hang out
with you all day in school watching you.
The
second
article is entitled :”Pro-Paddle student, families fight to
keep the paddle”
This article is about St. Augustine’s in New Orleans a predominately
black
Catholic School. The article is definitely for corporal punishment
pretty much
stating that throughout the schools history it has been known for its
policies
on punishment, as well as the number of fine upstanding citizens that
have
graduated from there in the black community. Who claim they are no worse
for
wear from it.
The
third
article entitled:” Student’s
still paddled in schools, study finds”. I never knew there were
other
types of corporal punishment. Such as “ear twisting, hair pulling, and
knuckle
wrapping”. I would have to be more on the traditional side of it meaning
just paddling.
This assignment was done in conjunction with Joe M., who did the part of corporal punishment being a good disciplinary action in our schools youth.
Corporal Punishment should not be allowed in our schools today. We are a more civilized people than we were. 19 states still allow this type of punishment to go on. Over 200,000 kids a year are still, basically being abused by authority figures. They should be encouraging, not discouraging our youth.
ABCnews did a story on this problem. USATODAY also did a recent story on this subject where a 14 year old child was injured after receiving a paddling. This is a very serious concern, kids are being punished for really stupid reasons, like getting a bad grade on a test, as was the case for the boy in the ABC story. CNN did another story about the need to get rid of corporal punishment in our schools.
The effects that corporal punishment has on our school children leads to problems in learning. It also, can lead to many emotional and psychological problems. These problems can follow a person for the rest of their lives. Many different books have been written on the subject, like The Journal of Youth and Adolescence. The National Association of School Nurses is behind getting rid of this discipline in all states for reasons like these and many others.
&nbps; Personally, as a child I think I was given the paddle once or twice. I was a pretty good kid. The reason for one of my paddlings was for ditching school with some friends in the sixth grade. Don't recall what happened to get the others, but I remember them happening. I saw the effects of it in my older brother. I know he spent a lot of time in the principles office. He didn't make it past the 7th grade on the second try. Spent a lot of time in and out of prison, as well.
Not that it had any effects on me that I can think of. I just really don't agree with someone else punishing my child. I think that it is my job to do so, when I think it is appropriate. My children have their problems just like most, but, paddling isn't going to solve a thing the way I see it. I think it creates more problems than it solves. It gives our kids the wrong idea on how we should handle a situation, violence only breeds violence.
Our summary, we came to the conclusion that once we researched and discuss what each other thought on the subject. We could come to a some what common ground, seeing how each other thinks that punishment in school should and shouldn't be allowed. Joe thinks that it is ok until it becomes abuse of any type. I think it is all abuse. We can see that in certain situations that it might be necessary as long as it is monitored in a controlled environment. The only thing that should be allowed is paddling, no other form of punishment should be tolerated, like hair pulling, ear twisting, or hitting any other parts of the body. Joe and I approve this message and came to common ground on corporal punishment.

unpopular culture
I' m going to go with video games and watching TV. They have both a negative and positive effect on people, http://www.raisesmartkid.com/3-to-6-years-old/4-articles/34-the-good-and-bad-effects-of-video-games. They can be helpful in some situation and they can also be blamed on some bad behavior in some people.Sometimes it is just a way for people to take out aggression, but some may take it to far. They say it can be just a waste of time. You become less social, spending to much time inside by yourself. It effects what kids learn and how they learn. They can teach kids wrong values and bad language. Video games are just a waste of time in my opinion. They can also create health problems, obesity is one example. Children need to get outside and learn and experience new things not hang out in front of a screen for hours on end. It's just not the way it should be, unless it is for learning purposes.
Well, upon further research of the study on whether or not sitting in front of a screen is linked to obesity is touch and go. The evidence is sketchy at best. Some say that kids who sit around and watch TV all day or play video games tend to also, sit around and snack all day. Which in turn makes them more likely to gain weight.
The same can be said about violence and sitting in front of a screen, whether it be playing video games or watching TV. Either way, I still think that it's just not healthy to spend so much time in front of a screen. Kids should learn at a young age to be more active, to get out and explore, exercise. It can be fun, take for example the program Play60 that the NFL program provides for our youth. Now that's a great idea.
As it looks, the evidence for these things happening to our youth is still up for debate, some things do connect the dots. So, we should take into consideration our youth and get them away from the screens more and out into the world. I really get a kick out of this video. She doesn't appear to be obese or violent, but, her social outlook is really messed up.

finding the images
All the images were looked up, they were from . gov sites so i would have to consider that they are all reliable sources. One came from City of Montgomery police department. All where first search lines from Google. I typed in Mrs. Henry M. Robert Jr., it took me to National Archives and Records Administration. The next one was the map, typed in AP Newsfeature, background map and the map was the first site on the list. American Treasures of the Library of Congress, 1961 freedom rides. The next was Rosa Parks arrest record in Montgomery. Found on Historical Thinking Matters. Found the 88th congress roll call, House of Representatives Feb. 10 1964, site HR 7152 gov. archives first site on the list. That was easier than i thought it was going to be. All were first on list of sites to go to with what i typed in and all were what i considered reliable sources.
1. I used Google search, typed in Mrs. Henry M. Robert Jr.. The first to pop-up on the list was National Archives and Records Administration. Then clicked on that first one and it took me straight to a copy of the letter that i was looking for. This, in my opinion, is a very credible site due to the fact that it is a .gov site. It worked the first time, didn't need to try any other search's.
2. I used Google search on this one, also. Then typed in the words AP Newsfeature and background map. First on the list was American Treasures of the Library of Congress 1961 Freedom Rides. Clicked on that and it took to a picture of the map i wanted. This was, also, a .gov site, making me believe that it is pretty credible. First time , first try.
3. Google search was used to find this one, as well. I typed the words City of Montgomery, 12-1-55 arrest records in the box and the first thing to pop-up on the list was Historical Thinking Matters story of Rosa Parks. I went to that site and saw the complaint. It was given by the City of Montgomery police department. That is why i thought it was a credible source to get the information from. This was the first try on this, found it.
4. Google search played its roll in this one. I typed in the words 88th congress roll call, Feb. 10 1964, house of representatives. HR 7152 a gov. archives site came up and i clicked it to show me the same picture that was on the assignment. Seeing that it was a government site i assumed it to be credible. The first time i looked it up, it came up. only had to look once.
Everything i looked up was first on the list and on the first try, it was very satisfying.

GMC-lovemarks
GMC is an American label, it represents all that is fun, exciting and hard working. GMC trucks portray all that i do. They work hard and they play hard. It's advertised just as i live. I have always used it for work related purposes. I have used it haul around equipment and for hauling wood. I have used it for fun. I have taken it hunting and fishing and camping. I have owned four different trucks that are GMC. It is the truck that i will go back to time and time again. It started with my dad, and has gone down to me. The GMC is a family tradition, that is pretty much how i see it as a lovemark. It has been like a hand me down. Second generation GMC owner. I plan to pass mine down to my son when i get around to buying another. He is ready to drive now, he'll have his license in about a month. I see this truck as a reliable companion. It gets me to and from work, school and wherever i go everyday. It goes where i need it to and when i need it to.They are very reliable, I have only had to change the oil on my latest truck and it has over 190,000 miles on it. This truck is really what i define myself with, it has dependability, power, and a little touch of class. I got the four door truck, which comes in very handy having kids and for hauling around the dogs. It gets me to the places that i need to be. I have never been stuck in my truck, the four wheel drive is incredible. The Duramax diesel has got all the power it needs, but i went ahead and put a chip in it anyway to get the extra horse-power. I think GMC is a perfect fit for my life. It is for fun and it is for hard working people. I am both of those things. I really don't know how else to explain that the GMC brand is me, hard working, dependable, reliable. You can use this truck for all the things that you need in life. To get you where you'll always need to be. I am a GMC owner and always will be.

Are we doomed as an immigrant
I related to this article as an immigrant, I grew-up in a time where Atari was the most we had to play with, games like; Pong, Defender, and Space invaders. The Digital Divide: Digital natives, Digital immigrants an article in our class reading by Marc Prensky, it pretty much talks of the whole of pop culture and how the N-gen or the D-gen is taking over and us immigrants either need to catch-up or be left behind. I thought this was the thesis statement in this article, " Our students have changed radically. Today's students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach." "They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, video games, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age." Most educators of the current times are immigrants and want to teach as they were taught, we are finding out that this isn't working." It's very serious, because the single biggest problem facing education today is that our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language." students of today think and process information from their predecessors, it's likely due to the fact that students brains have physically changed, are different from ours, because of how they have grown up. Basically it boils down to whether we or me as an immigrant need to learn the language of the N-gen so that we don't fall behind and become extinct to the changing world around us. We must adapt. We can't get rid of all the things that the immigrants know and have to teach all. Some of these things are necessary to learn. The methods in which they are taught may have to be updated so that it is easier and more interesting, to keep the students attention, so they learn the way they need to. Games have become a big tool in the learning process," first person shooter" style has become very popular. The whole idea here is that todays students need things to come to them faster , that is the way they are used to recieving things in the digital era. They have learned via the internet and computer skills and video games. So, we need to start teaching them the way they are accustomed to learning. That is what the author gives to us in this article, examples of how the old ways are no longer working for this generation. We need to start using the ways of the new generation to teach the new generation. The next article in the book goes on to talk more about the whole native, immigrant debate, haven't read that one just yet, Marc Prensky also gives a list of notes at the end of the article on many different sources for this topic. Youtube has a video on this like; "The world has changed, Students have changed, is education changing?" and many others. I also looked into a few other articles for and against the idea of education not being up to par for todays students. Google has a lot of stuff on the Digital native and the education system.

I picked t.v. because it is a big part of our culture today. It's how we get our advertisement and entertainment. It 's also how we get our daily information, by watching the news. It's what i use everyday to keep caught-up on world and local happenings and just to sit and enjoy a good movie or sitcom. The internet is very popular today. I use it only for school, but i have learned some things that i didn't know from this class. I'm not much on the social networking, i leave that for my kids. Then there is music, I prefer heavy metal, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Metallica, Motley Crue, AC/DC. This is who i grew-up listening to and they are still popular to this day. My kids even have been to an Iron Maiden concert. Some of the newer metal is just as good, it never goes out of style. Listening to music just makes my time at work or driving down the road go by much easier.

A question?
Seeings how i forgot to submit a question before class last week i must do it now and try to answer my own question. My question is "What does all this have to do with Psychology?" Alot of what i read was just a refresher of last semesters psych class. The id and the ego, what makes us do what we do? I understand that all the things we do in todays world has an answer for it. What we do everyday defines who we are as people and that is where psychology comes in. We are trying to determine how our minds work and what we do that makes our minds work the way they do. I really don't have much of an answer for my own question right now except that i suppose you can find psychology in everything we do. It is all about how how we think that determines what we do.

This is a whole new concept for me. I really have never had any experience in computers. I don't know what I'm doing most of the time. It's fun, learning a lot of new things. Hope to get much better at this computer stuff. What we have been doing has seemed to help a whole lot, so far. Learning from doing is probably the best way to learn something new. I hope that it doesn't take to much time for me to figure this out, only have a few weeks to get it down. My kids are better at this than i am, getting a little help from them. I don't have available access to a computer, at school or a friends, nothing of my own. That seems to be a little bit of a problem for this class, but going to try and make it work. GOING TO MAKE IT WORK!
